SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - A lively crowd gathered on a sunny Sunday in San Francisco to protest a meeting of cross-Pacific political leaders and a wide spectrum of other issues, prominently including those calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. The home of 1960s counterculture, San Francisco has retained an anti-authoritarian sensibility even as tech companies and employees have made the city a global influencer. The action could become confrontational on Wednesday, with protesters calling to block attendees from entering the San Francisco conference center. San Francisco is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic slower than many cities, with some major retailers abandoning Market Street. The Tacoma-based Point Defiance Zoo is conducting dental exams and teeth-cleaning in its managed care program. The fittingly named vet is helping bolster a population of only 270 red wolves known to exist, mostly in managed care or zoos. The animals in managed care tend to live longer than free-ranging red wolves, in part because they have annual exams and dental hygiene. The rare red wolves once ranged from New York to Texas, but by the late 1960s to 1970s a once thriving population was decimated. Three of those released came from the Point Defiance Zoo program, including a pup born April 13.

SATUS, Washington, July 22 (Reuters) - A fast-growing wildfire forced residents to evacuate a rural stretch of southern Washington state's Klickitat County on Saturday after it burned more than 30,000 acres in less than 24 hours. The Newell Road Wildfire has already destroyed several structures in the area and is threatening homes, farms, crops and livestock, solar and wind farms and a natural gas pipeline, county emergency officials said. Firefighters from across the area have descended on the blaze that is burning just north of the Columbia River, which marks the state's border with Oregon. Officials have not said what caused the fire, and there have been no reports of injuries or deaths. April 27 (Reuters) - As wildfire season approaches, U.S. officials along the West Coast are working hard to mitigate risks with prescribed burns, while a widespread educational campaign is underway to create buffers around fire-prone homes. In Washington state, Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Hillary Franz is working on reversing negative perceptions surrounding prescribed fires. The test fires were lit ahead of a full prescribed burn.
